The New Hampshire Department of Transportation announced a lane shift for northbound traffic on US Route 1 at the bridge over the rail trail near the intersection with North Road in North Hampton. The change, announced May 29, is expected to last several weeks as part of ongoing bridge maintenance.

According to the department, this bridge is currently on the State Red List and is scheduled for replacement under a future project (Project No. 24457), which will address both the structure and deck of the bridge. The lane shift has been implemented to move traffic away from a section of the bridge that has deteriorated over time, including an area that was previously repaired but continues to wear and expand.

“Shifting traffic away from this section helps maintain safety while we prepare for the full bridge replacement. Temporary traffic control measures are being installed now, with the full traffic pattern expected to be in place by the end of the week,” according to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

As part of this change, officials said that “the northbound left-turn lane onto North Road (westbound) just south of the bridge will be closed.” Drivers seeking access to North Road from northbound US Route 1 are advised to use alternate routes.

Message boards and other traffic control devices will notify drivers about these changes. The department also encourages road users to sign up for free real-time construction and traffic updates via text or email at newengland511.org. More information can be found in the organization’s press release.
