Liza Mazur, Representative of New Hampshire, said that parents are increasingly monitoring school content after LGBTQ+ materials were removed from a public middle school. The statement was made on the social media platform X.

“I have my eye on SAU 19,” said Mazur. “Last year we got a whiteboard full of LGBQT+ stuff, including Trevor Project links and a “genderbread man” removed from our public middle school’s library. Apparently it was up there for a while and no one spoke up. Now parents are watching, and so am I.”

Debates over LGBTQ+ content in New Hampshire schools have intensified following the passage of HB 2, which restricts diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. According to the New Hampshire Bulletin, a coalition including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), educators, and LGBTQ+ advocates has filed a lawsuit arguing that the measure is unconstitutional. They claim it limits discussion of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, and disability in classrooms.

New Hampshire schools show significant variation in their support for LGBTQ+ students. According to GLSEN’s 2021 National School Climate Survey snapshot, only 12% of secondary schools reported offering inclusive curricula or Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) programs. This is despite 79% of LGBTQ+ students identifying supportive educators. The report also found that 56% of LGBTQ+ students faced verbal harassment and 24% experienced physical harassment; however, most incidents went unreported.

National data underscores the risks associated with anti-LGBTQ+ school policies. As reported by Time magazine, nearly one-third of LGBTQ+ youth said their schools enforced at least one discriminatory rule, such as banning chosen pronouns or restricting GSAs. Students in such environments faced significantly higher rates of verbal and physical harassment, unwanted sexual contact, and greater mental health challenges compared to peers in supportive schools.

Mazur has represented Hillsborough District 44 in the New Hampshire House of Representatives since 2022 and won re-election in 2024. According to Ballotpedia, she previously served as a Library Trustee and Venue Operations Director. While her legislative positions on LGBTQ+ education are not well-documented, her ongoing service reflects the role of local lawmakers in state-level debates on curriculum and parental rights.
