An unidentified Connecticut man has passed away after hiking in New Hampshire, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division.
The 66-year-old man was hiking in the Mount Washington area on the Jewell Trail Aug. 14, when he collapsed from an unknown medical condition, prompting the Army National Guard to deploy a Blackhawk helicopter for an air rescue, NHPR reported.
“Officials say that a 66-year-old hiker from Naugatuck, Connecticut, was hiking with his sons when he suddenly collapsed around 12:15 p.m., more than 2 miles up from the Base Station parking lot. His sons immediately started CPR and called 911. Fish & Game Conservation Officers were alerted to the emergency and started the rescue response,” the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division and Operation Game Thief posted on Facebook Aug. 15.
The helicopter, intended to aid the man and his three sons, arrived two and a half hours after he collapsed, but it could not reach the area due to low and thick cloud cover during the first attempt.
During the second attempt, after refueling, the Army National Guard was able to lower a rescuer to transfer the hiker into the helicopter, according to NHPR.
The man's identification is being withheld from the public until authorities can notify the extended family, according to a report from Patch.
