EXETER, New Hampshire – On Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at approximately 7:06 PM, Sergeant Gary Wood Jr., of the #NHSP #TroopA Barracks, initiated a traffic stop on a 2006 Chevrolet 1500 pickup on Route 101 West in the Town of Exeter for a lane violation, which posed a hazard to the motoring public, as well as a registration violation. After briefly coming to a stop in the breakdown lane, the Chevrolet fled at a high rate of speed. Sergeant Wood subsequently pursued the Chevrolet along Route 101 West through the Towns of Brentwood, Epping, and eventually entered the Town of Raymond. During the course of the vehicle pursuit, the Chevrolet continuously traveled at an excessive rate of speed, failed to properly maintain a single lane of travel, and executed unsafe passing maneuvers.

As the Chevrolet approached Exit #4 in the Town of Raymond, Raymond Police Officers successfully deployed tire deflation devices gradually deflating the front right tire of the Chevrolet. The operator of the Chevrolet continued along Route 101 West in the Town of Raymond for a brief distance before abandoning the Chevrolet and fleeing on foot. As a result of the Chevrolet being left in gear by the operator, the Chevrolet coasted across the travel lanes of Route 101 West and into a ditch adjacent to the highway. 

The operator subsequently fled on foot across the grass median, thereafter attempting to run across the travel lanes of Route 101 East. At this point Sergeant Wood deployed his K9 partner “Ida” at which time K9 “Ida” successfully apprehended the operator. With the assistance of additional responding Troopers, Sergeant Wood then placed the operator into custody without further incident. Further investigation confirmed that the operator had been the lone occupant in the Chevrolet during this incident.

After being taken into custody, the operator was identified as Richard M. Sullivan, age 41, of Derry, New Hampshire. Following a medical evaluation at a nearby hospital, Sullivan was processed at the Exeter Police Department. 

As a result of this incident, Sullivan was charged with Reckless Conduct (Class B Felony), Disobeying An Officer (Class A Misdemeanor), Operating After Suspension – Subsequent Offense (Class A Misdemeanor), Driving Without Giving Proof (Class A Misdemeanor), Resisting Arrest or Detention (Class A Misdemeanor), and Reckless Operation (Violation). Following processing, Sullivan was released on personal recognizance bail pending an appearance in the Rockingham County Superior Court on October 20, 2022 at 12:30 PM. 

In order to bring this incident to a safe conclusion, Route 101 West was closed to traffic at Exit #4 in the Town of Raymond for approximately 20 minutes while #Troopers investigated the scene and emergency personnel worked to facilitate the removal of the Chevrolet.

During the course of this incident, Troopers from the New Hampshire State Police – Troop A Barracks were assisted by multiple agencies to include the Exeter Police Department, the Raymond Police Department, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Raymond Ambulance, and Morgan’s Towing & Repair.
