The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announces the start of the application cycle for the Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality (CMAQ) program.  The CMAQ program is a federally funded reimbursement program that provides up to 80% of funds for projects that improve air quality by reducing the amount of vehicular emissions.  There is approximately $30 million total dollars available for this round. Funding is targeted for federal fiscal years 2025 through 2028.

• Examples of CMAQ projects include: Signal coordination, intersection improvements, park and ride facilities, intelligent transportation systems, sidewalks, non-recreational bicycle and pedestrian facilities and Transit investments, including transit vehicle acquisitions and construction of new facilities or improvements to facilities that increase transit capacity, as well as operating assistance for new services or the incremental cost of expanded services.

The application process is broken into three distinct and mandatory steps.  

1. Submission of a Letter of Interest (LOI)
2. Attendance at a mandatory pre-application virtual workshop hosted by the Department
3. Submission of the CMAQ application

Key Dates:

• September 26, 2022:  Application cycle announced, and guidance documents released.
• November 4, 2022:  Letters of Interest due to NHDOT by 4:00pm.
• December 2022: Mandatory CMAQ Project Workshops to be scheduled (virtual) via TEAMS or ZOOM.
• January 6, 2023: Completed applications due to NHDOT.
• March 24, 2023: Application scores and rankings completed.
• Spring/Summer, 2023: CMAQ projects recommended for inclusion in the draft Ten Year Plan.

The application will be available in October 2022.  A Letter of Interest (LOI) and attendance at the pre-application information meeting is Mandatory.  Failure to meet both of those requirements will disqualify your application from being submitted for possible funding.
