Teachers in New Hampshire are facing legal threats that would prevent them from teaching concepts of critical race theory due to their “divisiveness.”

“New Hampshire's Right to Freedom from Discrimination in Public Workplaces and Education law bans teachers from educating about systematic racism and discrimination,” Twitter user Chuck Hamilton tweeted Nov. 15.

ABC News reported that the state passed the "Right to Freedom from Discrimination in Public Workplaces and Education" law in June, which would prohibit schools from teaching critical race theory, according to conservative activists.

Eighth-grade history teacher Valerie Wolfson, who teaches at Oyster River Middle School in Durham, said the law was vague in nature and could result in a problematic interpretation of its meaning.

"The current language is very much focused on a false premise that somehow teachers are actively discriminating against students or teaching that one group is inferior or superior to another. The language is incredibly nebulous," Wolfson told ABC News. "The law does not spell out anything about what I can and can't teach."

Republican politicians have begun using the phrase "critical race theory" to energize their base, believing that the subject cultivates a divisive nature among children, according to ABC News.

Wolfson explained that, typically, if a parent has a problem or question about what is being taught in class, the parent would reach out to the teacher or the school administration first. "Under the new law, families can bypass all of those steps and go right to the state," Wolfson told ABC News.

There is now an online form on New Hampshire's state website that parents can fill out if they want to report teachers for teaching critical race theory.
